Rose VL Deli is a Vietnamese restaurant at 6424 SE Powell Blvd in Portland, OR 97206. Its appeal is a focused, changing menu built around Vietnamese soups, with a small selection of other items rather than a long list of choices. Customers describe a straightforward format: depending on the day, there are usually two soups to choose from, along with salad rolls. That simplicity makes it easier to focus on what regulars mention most: flavorful broth and satisfying noodle soups. Rose VL Deli has a 4.8-star rating from 443 reviews, and customer comments reflect a loyal following that returns for familiar favorites.

The turmeric yellow noodle soup is one standout, praised by a returning customer who said it remained just as good as remembered. Cao lau is another option customers have ordered, while the peppery pork ball noodle soup has its own fans. The exact soup selection changes by day, so visitors may find different choices on different visits. Reviewers also mention red curry, with the option to have it with noodles instead of a baguette. The baguette is described as soft and fluffy, and customers say it works especially well for dipping into the curry. Salad rolls provide another choice alongside the soups.

The experience at Rose VL Deli is casual and centered on the meal: a concise menu, friendly service noted by customers, and soups that people say are worth coming back for. One reviewer appreciated being offered broth to take home with leftover soup, a thoughtful touch that made the meal easier to finish later. Another noted that the restaurant now accepts cards. These details come from individual customer experiences, and practical preferences can change, but they help convey the welcoming, unpretentious character guests describe. If you enjoy choosing from a small daily selection rather than sorting through an extensive menu, Rose VL Deli may be a good fit.

Rose VL Deli is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; it is closed Wednesday and Sunday. Since the menu changes by day and customers recommend arriving early to try the soups, checking the day's options and planning an earlier visit can help you make the most of your stop. Whether you are in the mood for turmeric noodle soup, peppery pork ball noodle soup, cao lau, red curry, or salad rolls, this Portland Vietnamese restaurant offers a distinct, soup-forward choice on SE Powell Boulevard. It is especially suited to diners who value a carefully focused menu, flavorful broth, and a friendly neighborhood meal over a broad range of dishes.

Not our first visit, but it’s been a while—and we noticed they now accept cards. On a Saturday, we ordered the turmeric yellow noodle soup and the cao lau. The turmeric soup remains our favorite: just as good as we remembered, though we still miss the fresh noodles you get in Vietnam. Adding extra meat is worth it, but it does bump up the price. The cao lau was a bit underwhelming and leaned bland for our tastes. It wasn’t bad by any means, but since we visit Westminster several times a year, and Vietnam, it’s hard for most places to measure up. Note on my rating scale: Sharing this for transparency, as I recognize that a 3-star review may be misinterpreted as reflecting a mediocre experience. 5 stars – Exceptional: Outstanding food, service, and/or overall experience. Truly worth going out of your way for. (For example, we frequently make the drive from San Antonio to Austin just for Uchi.) 4 stars – Very Good: Exceeds expectations in quality, service, or ambiance. 3 stars – Good: A solid experience that meets expectations. I consider any place with 3 stars or above worthy of a return visit. 2 stars – Disappointing: Falls short in food quality or service. 1 star – Poor: Not recommended.

Today I got the peppery pork ball noodle soup. It's one of the two soups available on Monday mornings. Always amazing. So delicious. So friendly. I only ate half of my soup and they filled a to go container half way up with broth to add my leftovers to. Amazing. You have to go early though. Try to get there by 10am. Soup for breakfast is my new favorite thing! Different soups everyday.

Very tasty soups and an even simpler menu to follow. You normally have 2 options depending on the day you go, but it is well worth stopping in for. The broth is fantastic, and worth the price ($15 each). The baguette was actually very soft and fluffy as well, and worked great for dunking in the curry. I’m very glad I checked this one out, and would even consider going again to try more of the menu! (Wonton Noodle Soup 4/5) (Red Chicken Curry 5/5) (Salad roll 3/5)

Limited menu that changes daily means they do their best to get the dishes right. Note that for the Red Curry you can get noodles instead of the baguette.

My apologies to Rose VL, I've been coming here for years, but somehow have never reviewed it. This place is the epitome of doing one thing, and doing it really well. Each day they have a soup special, along with one other soup, and that's about it, except for salad rolls. The soups have never failed to impress, whether I've gone for the special, or not. My most recent visit, the one that prompted this review, was the first time I've ever done a take-out order. The pandemic has made them experts at packaging a bundle that you assemble at home: a container of broth, a bowl with noodles, hoisin sauce and sriracha packets, and perhaps some meat, a baggie with additional meat if appropriate, another baggie with onions and green onions, and a final baggie with lime wedge, cilantro, Thai basil, and bean sprouts. It all came together beautifully, just like it does when dining in.
