Lovely baked goods, good coffee, and excellent help. Visited this bakery near the end of the lunch hour and was happy to see so many delicious baked goods still available. I’ve had a spate of clerks who looked and acted like they didn’t care about their approach to customer service, but the staff member who helped me approached with a positive attitude and engaged with me, asking if I had any questions about what was on offer. I tried the no name bread which was a croissant base with parmesan cheese, butter, and herbs, and it was the perfect blend of buttery, savory goodness. The morning bun was sugary and sweet but not overly so, and it paired perfectly with an iced coffee. The pretzel was also amazing, my only criticism being a bit too much salt, but the texture and flavor were on point. The currant scones were also just the right amount of sweet and were dense and fulfilling. So many more treats to try, I’ll definitely be back.

I conducted a morning performance sweep at Seven Hills Baking Co. inside the Castro Valley Marketplace to check their lamination metrics against regional standards. The kitchen team demonstrates a brilliant command over high-heat sugar caramelization and savory structures, but their execution across the standard pastry vault suffers from significant moisture retention and a clear lack of crispness. The marketplace location is excellent and entirely frictionless, offering easy, free parking in downtown Castro Valley. Inside, the counter service is remarkably friendly, efficient, and welcoming. The retail side offers an impressive array of fresh bread loaves, though it is worth noting that they implement a small upcharge if you request to have your loaf sliced at the register. Savory Scone: An exceptional standout and the absolute highlight for a great breakfast. The texture was beautifully crumbly without drying out, packed with rich flavor, and heavily encrusted with toasted seeds and fresh herbs. Kouign-Amann: A fascinating study in textural contrast. The extreme exterior shell achieved the exact sharp, shattering crunch I was hoping to find across their lamination line. However, slicing into the core reveals a structural pivot: while the outer edge snaps beautifully, the deep interior remained distinctly gooey rather than crispy. It delivers a highly indulgent, buttery sweetness, but misses the mark on uniform crispness. Butter Croissant: A distinct technical disappointment. While the internal honeycomb cross-section shows great visual cell expansion under a lens and the flavor itself was tasty, the pastry completely lacked structural crispness. It felt soft to the touch when squeezed and remained completely soft upon biting into it. It is entirely passable, but structurally it fails to rank among the better croissants I have encountered in the region. Chocolate Almond Croissant: This twice-baked variant suffered from an identical moisture trap. While the internal chocolate baton alignment was clean, the entire upper vault was soft and moist, yielding only a minimal, fleeting crunch on the extreme edges where the frangipane hadn't steamed the dough. To make matters worse, the structural integrity was poor—the pastry completely seemed to fall apart while eating it. Morning Bun: Visually striking with a uniform flower-petal whorl, but flavor-wise it lands strictly on the average side. It delivers a standard cinnamon-sugar profile but lacks the distinct, buttery personality needed to stand out. The hospitality and marketplace convenience here are top-tier, and the bakery is well worth visiting for their savory baking and sugar-crusted specialties. I will simply be holding their lamination line to a tighter standard and skipping the standard croissants on my next return.

Our friend recommended this for sourdough and qouign amann. We got there about 815 am. After deciding on an almond croissant, ham and cheese croissant, a sourdough baguette and a simple morning bun with coffee, we proceeded to try a sampling of each. Yum. The right balance of crunch and sweet and butter. My husband hoped they would toast the bread a little and the quiche would have been a nice variety but they don't have the heating capability. They also have just drip coffee. Service was nice, and efficient. My favorite was the quoign amann, you can easily split up the layers should you chooae to savor it.

This place is absolutely fantastic, for many reasons. The bread at Seven Hills is pleasing to the eye, pleasing to the palate, and pleasing to the wallet. It's surprisingly affordable for freshly baked artisinal bread. The selection of pastries is phenominal. Sure, people have their own expectations, and some are gonna 1 star anyplace. But take each moment in life and loaf as a precious gift, and I don't see how anybody can disparage this bread. The demi baguettes are great for homemade French Dip sandwiches.

Cute little bakery with some tasty baked goods and bread. The staff were friendly and attentive. There is seating inside and outside of this shopping center. I would recommend sitting outside and enjoying the beautiful weather. The only downside was they only have a drip coffee option, but they do have oat milk.
