Tempest Bar & Box Kitchen is a well-known bar & grill in San Francisco, CA that stands out for blending classic dive-bar energy with a kitchen that gives guests more than the usual late-night basics. Tucked on Natoma Street in the city, it has earned a strong local reputation, reflected in its 4.5 rating from more than 2,000 reviews. For people searching for a place that feels unpolished in the best way—casual, welcoming, and full of character—this is the kind of spot that keeps regulars coming back. With hours running from late morning until 2 a.m. every day, it fits easily into lunch plans, after-work drinks, dinner with friends, and late-night food runs.
What many guests notice first is the atmosphere. Tempest has the kind of lived-in personality people expect from a real neighborhood bar: dark corners, wall stickers and graffiti, a jukebox, a pool table, TVs for sports, and a crowd that feels mixed and easygoing. Reviewers often describe it as a solid dive bar with plenty of seating, no cover, and bartenders who are friendly without being overbearing. That balance makes it a good choice for many kinds of visits—meeting friends before a night out, hanging back for a few rounds, or dropping in solo for a drink in a relaxed setting.
The kitchen is a big part of why Tempest Bar & Box Kitchen gets attention beyond the usual bar scene. Customers regularly mention that the food goes past standard pub fare, with elevated takes on traditional bar food and a menu that changes every few months. Weekday specials from Monday to Friday add variety for repeat visitors, and the kitchen staying open until midnight is a real plus in San Francisco. If you are looking for late-night grub, casual comfort food, or something more satisfying than typical fried snacks, Tempest seems to deliver the kind of menu that surprises people in a good way.
Drinks are another consistent reason people stop in. Reviews mention cheap and tasty drinks, a solid selection, and bartenders who help set the tone for the place. Rather than feeling polished or trendy, the experience leans approachable and real. That makes this San Francisco, CA bar a fit for locals who appreciate neighborhood spots with personality, as well as visitors trying to find somewhere dependable near the SoMa area. It is also a practical option for groups, thanks to the long daily hours, casual seating, and entertainment like the pool table and jukebox.
For anyone browsing for a dependable bar & grill in San Francisco, Tempest Bar & Box Kitchen offers a combination that is hard to fake: character, late hours, friendly service, strong drinks, and food people actually talk about afterward. It is especially well suited for dive-bar fans, night owls, casual meetups, and anyone who likes a bar that feels comfortable rather than curated. In a city full of options, Tempest keeps its appeal simple—come as you are, grab a drink, order something from the kitchen, and settle into a place that feels like it has been part of the neighborhood for a long time.

Sign in to reviewI checked out Tempest Bar & Box Kitchen on a Thursday around 10 p.m. with some friends after finding it on Google as one of the top-rated spots in the area. The photos looked great, and I was excited to try it out. Unfortunately, our experience didn’t quite match the expectations — and to be fair, this is just based on the specific time we visited. When we arrived, there didn’t seem to be any floor staff managing the tables. Almost every open table was dirty, with leftover food, debris, and empty glasses. We genuinely couldn’t find a clean place to sit, which was a bit surprising given that the space itself looks really cool and has a great vibe. We ended up heading to the bar where there were only two available seats for our group of four, so we made it work with two sitting and two standing. The bartender seemed friendly but was clearly very busy. Despite waiting for close to 10 minutes, we weren’t able to get service — even though the venue itself wasn’t particularly busy at the time, with only a couple of tables occupied (though the bar area was full). At that point, we decided to leave. That said, I do want to highlight that the aesthetic of the bar is really nice — it has a vibrant, laid-back energy that I can see being great on a different night. I’d be open to giving it another try in the future, but based on this visit, the lack of cleanliness and service made it a disappointing experience.
Solid dive bar that checks all the boxes: pool table, graffiti, stickers on the walls, dark corners, interesting patrons and a jukebox that cranked metal. Surprising they had a solid kitchen with elevated variations of traditional bar food offerings

Came here on a whim. I'm glad I did. I love Dive bars. Cheap and tasty drinks and a decent menu where the kitchen is open until 12am. Plenty of seating an no cover charge. They have a pool table and televisions (For sports viewing). Not quite rowdy crowd and the bartenders are pleasant. All are welcome!
Always greeted with nice bartenders and friendly service. Food menu changes every few months and specials Monday to Friday.
