Thanh Ky Restaurant is a longtime Chinese Restaurant in Oakland, CA, the kind of classic hole-in-the-wall that locals treat as a neighborhood constant. Tucked at 659 E 12th St in Oakland, it draws a steady stream of regulars—often called OGs by fans—who come for reliable comfort food, generous portions, and prices that still feel like real value. With a 4.2 rating across more than 350 reviews, the place has earned its reputation the slow way: by serving the same satisfying plates day after day in a no-frills setting that gets busy even on weekdays. Walk in around late morning and you may already see a short wait forming; that energy is part of the charm.
Signature dishes keep people returning. The dry Hu tieu with egg noodles is frequently called superb, a well-balanced bowl that lands around the mid-teens and leaves diners happy. The Crispy Fried Shrimp Roll arrives cut into pieces so every bite stays crunchy, and many say one order is never enough. House Special Ho Fun, sometimes ordered with pork kidneys, surprises with its depth, while the soupless noodles deliver clean, fresh flavors and a light broth perfect for sipping. Coffee is sweet, strong, and served with the pinh—an old-school touch that rounds out an early meal. These are the plates that define the kitchen: straightforward, carefully prepared, and rooted in the comfort-food tradition that makes this Chinese Restaurant feel familiar the moment you sit down.
Hours run Monday and Wednesday through Sunday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with Tuesday closed, so the sweet spot is early brunch or lunch before the midday rush. The casual atmosphere suits solo diners, small groups of friends, and anyone who prefers food that speaks louder than décor. Card payments are accepted (with a noted fee), a practical update that sits comfortably alongside the spot’s long-standing, cash-friendly roots. Whether you live nearby or make a special trip across Oakland, the combination of busy energy, fair prices, and consistent noodles creates the kind of experience that turns first visits into habits.
What stands out most is the sense of place. Thanh Ky Restaurant does not chase trends; it simply keeps serving the dishes that built its following—soupless noodles that taste clean and balanced, shrimp rolls with real crunch, and house specials that reward regulars who know exactly what they want. Reviewers often mention leaving fully satisfied and wishing they lived closer, a common refrain for a spot that delivers comfort food at its best. The room fills with people who have been coming “since forever” alongside newcomers discovering why the line forms even on a Wednesday. That mix of loyalty and discovery is the quiet engine behind its enduring appeal in the East 12th Street corridor.
For anyone exploring Oakland, CA and looking for an unpretentious Chinese Restaurant that prioritizes flavor, value, and a genuine neighborhood feel, this is a reliable stop. Plan for an early arrival if you want to beat the lunch crowd, order the dry Hu tieu or the crispy shrimp roll, and settle in for a meal that feels both familiar and carefully made. The result is simple: good food, fair prices, and the kind of steady local reputation that only comes from years of doing the same things well.

Sign in to reviewThey have card now (with a 8.5% fee)! Oakland classic hole in the wall that gets busy including weekdays. I can on a Wednesday at 11:40 and by the time I left there was a wait. Fantastic value. Dry Hu tieu with egg noodles is superb 13.50. Coffee is sweet and strong and served with the pinh. Love the condiment variety too. Parking is tough but sometimes there’s spots in the lot kitty corner to it. I would consider relabeling to a Vietnamese restaurant, even though they do serve some Chinese dishes. I mean it really is both
Thanh Ky Restaurant, Oakland I've been coming to Thanh Ky since forever. You'll always see OG's eating here. And yes, this is a hole in the wall spot. Thanh Ky’s Crispy Fried Shrimp Roll is so good! It’s cut up into pieces so every bite has a crunch! Just thinking about it, one order isn’t enough! 🤤 The staff are always nice and the owner is always friendly. The noodle soup always hit the spot when I'm craving for noodles! 😋
I came here years ago and I returned to be disappointed. I love to support local businesses! We had the egg noodle with the wonton and that was okay, but the chow fun flat noodles are usually 3/4” wide at other restaurants. Ours were like left over thin pieces?
We visited Thanh Ky Cafe for an early brunch to beat the lunch rush. Since it’s similar to another spot we frequent, we were confident the noodles would be good—and they did not disappoint! We ordered the #9 “House Special Ho Fun,” which includes pork kidneys. The standout surprise was the addition of fried pork skin, adding a delicious crunch and depth of flavor to the dish. If you’re in the area, it’s worth stopping by. Just be aware that the surrounding neighborhood can feel a little sketchy—after all, it is Oakland—so take a few extra precautions. Overall, tasty food and a satisfying experience!
This place is not an easy commute for us but we were in the area and had to stop for the signature soupless noodles. It did not disappoint. Well balanced, fresh, and had such a nice clean broth for sipping. It is comfort food at its best. Satisfied all of us! Wish we lived closer.
