What draws people in is the variety. Reviews consistently mention a strong selection of pastries, with customers describing the shelves as fresh and reliably good. Traditional Mexican pastries are a big part of the appeal, and regulars also call out French bread, concha, cocktail buns, sweet buns, and milk-bread-style buns with buttery coconut filling. One reviewer even compared the cream buns to nostalgic Fiji cream buns, praising the balanced sweetness and fresh bread. The French bread gets special attention too, especially when it is still warm from the oven. Altogether, the menu feels practical and generous, making Kings Bakery Cafe a solid pick when you want both familiar staples and a few treats to bring home.
The experience here sounds simple in the best way. Customers describe grabbing a tray and tongs, choosing what looks good, and leaving with more than planned. There is seating, which helps set Kings Bakery Cafe apart from some quick bakery counters in the area, and several reviews note the value of being able to sit down and enjoy your pastries. The coffee is described as straightforward rather than fussy, which fits the shop’s style: this is not trying to be a trend-driven café, but a comfortable Mission Street bakery focused on baked goods first. Service also gets positive mentions, including friendly interactions and a welcoming tone.

Sign in to reviewKings Bakery Cafe is now my favorite Mission Street bakery for traditional Mexican pastries. Compared to the 3 larger bakeries near 24th & Mission, Kings has everyone beat by selection, price, and seating. The owners are Asian and the decor reflect their cultural heritage. The Cafe has no bathroom or sink, but has 4 small tables with chairs. The Cafe has cold beverages but the coffee is not quality. If you like Mexican Bolillos (baby baguette) that are fresh and warm then this is your place.
Great selection of pastries. Grab a tray and go nuts- everything is fresh and reliably good. Sweet buns are a special experience in subtlety. Coffee is just ‘fine’, as it should be for this establishment- it’s not some ‘3rd wave coffee shop’ or whatever. Glad to have discovered this excellent bakery.
They have great French Bread. They’re especially good when the bread were just freshly baked and hot out of the oven. It’s been a long time since I’ve had their bread. I think the price used to be 25 cents a piece, years ago. Now, they are 40 cents a piece, but that price still beats the prices you pay for French Bread from other places. If you love eating bread with butter, you need to try King’s Bakery Cafe’s French Bread with your favorite butter (or try Darigold, Challenge, or Straus, which I recommend).
Just found the closest thing to “Fiji cream buns” at Kings Bakery and I couldn’t be happier! The bread is unbelievably fresh, and the cream filling hits the perfect balance — not too sweet and not overloaded. A solid 10/10. Total nostalgia in every bite!
Grab a tray and tongs and go to town on French bread, cocktail buns made of milk bread and filled with a buttery coconut, concha, and a cookie. Service with a smile. Perfect for a brunch at home. Leftover sweet bread makes a ravishing bread pudding
