Mr Bread Bakery is a neighborhood bakery on Taraval Street in San Francisco, CA, serving customers from its address at 1018 Taraval St in the Sunset District area. With a 4.5-star rating from 297 reviews, this unassuming shop is a practical stop for people looking for Hong Kong-style baked goods, warm egg tarts, and savory or sweet buns. Its modest, hole-in-the-wall feel is part of the experience: visitors come for focused bakery favorites rather than a large sit-down setting, making it well suited for a quick morning pickup or a simple treat while exploring the neighborhood.
Egg tarts are among the most frequently mentioned reasons to visit Mr Bread Bakery. Customer feedback highlights both the Portuguese egg tart and the regular version. One reviewer described the Portuguese style as warm and custardy, with a buttery shell, while another preferred the regular egg tart for its flavor and found the caramelized topping on the Portuguese variety sweeter than their taste. For those hoping to take home tarts at their freshest, weekend demand can mean more freshly baked batches, but popular items may also sell out. Arriving earlier in the day is a sensible choice, especially for customers planning to buy several.
The bakery is also known for its char siu bao and pineapple buns. Reviewers note that the char siu bao has a balanced filling that is not overly sweet, with a satisfying ratio of bun to filling. The pineapple bun earns particular praise for its flavorful, crunchy top, and one customer called it among the best they had tried in the Bay Area and beyond. Freshness can vary later in the day, as one review noted a drier bun near closing time, so a morning or early-afternoon visit may be best for anyone prioritizing just-baked texture. Customers with dietary preferences should also ask about ingredients; a review specifically notes that the corn bun contains ham.
For local residents, nearby workers, and visitors searching for egg tarts in San Francisco, Mr Bread Bakery offers a straightforward place to pick up classic bakery items without a reported long wait on quieter weekday afternoons. The shop is open 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM on Monday and Wednesday through Sunday, and is closed Tuesday. Whether you are choosing a single warm tart, bringing home a box for family, or trying a char siu bao and pineapple bun for the first time, Mr Bread Bakery keeps the focus on familiar, satisfying baked goods in a convenient Taraval Street location.

Sign in to reviewEasy 5 star, had the portuguese egg tart and char siu bao. Egg tart was very custardy and warm with a buttery shell (could have been marginally flakier) Char siu bao was also great, filling was not too sweet at all, very balanced taste. The ratio of bao to filling was also good
If you go on the weekends, the chances of scoring a freshly baked egg tart increases as there are more people picking up tarts. I like their regular egg tarts more than the Portuguese ones. The caramelized sugar top is too sweet for me. Maybe the younger folks like it more. Surprisingly, no line today at around 1pm. The buns are good here. I like their BBQ pork buns and curry buns. The bonus for me is sometimes seeing old high school friends while waiting in line. They also do birthday cakes with customized lettering. Solid Chinese bakery.
Favorite Portuguese egg tarts in the city and cheapest. Come here if you want to taste authentic flavors. This one nails it though it is very unassuming and hole in the wall feel bakery. They often sell out so I recommend coming in the mornings. Other people frequently order 5 or more at a time so they run out. If you see a line of old chinese people ordering, you know it is good.
Great pineapple bun with a delightfully flavorful and crunchy top, though the bread was a little dry. I went shortly before closing, so it probably wasn't as fresh. No wait on a random Thursday around 5pm. Vegetarians beware: the corn bun has ham in it (I sadly didn't consider this possibility when I ordered, silly me). I was enjoying it before I realized, so recommend for meat eaters!
I’ve tried a lot of pineapple buns in the Bay Area, and all over the world too. Mr. Bread’s pineapple buns are some of the best I’ve had!! Egg tarts are also bomb.
