UCSF Medical Center is a Hospital in San Francisco, CA located at 505 Parnassus Ave, San Francisco, CA 94143. For people searching for advanced hospital care in San Francisco, this medical center is widely recognized for handling serious and complex conditions with modern technology, specialized treatment, and a large clinical team. Reviews reflect a mixed but detailed picture: many patients and families describe life-saving care, highly skilled physicians, and access to advanced medical methods, while others note frustrations around communication, delays, and day-to-day responsiveness. That combination gives a more realistic sense of what people may experience when choosing care in a major urban hospital.
What stands out most in customer feedback is the level of medical expertise. Several reviewers describe UCSF Medical Center as a place where patients receive treatment from world-class doctors, including specialists in demanding fields such as neurosurgery and cancer care. Families mention feeling grateful for the knowledge of the physicians and for care that seemed to make a real difference during critical moments. For those looking for a Hospital in San Francisco with access to advanced equipment and complex treatment capabilities, that reputation for high-level clinical care is a meaningful part of the hospital’s identity.
The atmosphere described by patients and visitors is also notable. Some reviews mention a quiet, peaceful setting that helps reduce stress during difficult hospital stays. Others appreciate the caring approach of nurses, support staff, and care teams who take time to answer questions and help patients feel more comfortable. A few long-term patients say that, over multiple years of visits, most of their experiences have been positive, which can matter when evaluating a hospital for ongoing treatment rather than a single appointment. There are also mentions of beautiful city and bay views, adding a small but human detail to the experience of being treated in San Francisco, CA.
At the same time, reviews suggest that experiences can vary. Some patients report problems with response times, communication, scheduling, and coordination, especially when trying to reach departments or arrange specialist referrals. Others describe concerns about nursing responsiveness and the overall flow of care during their stay. For prospective patients, these comments are useful to keep in mind alongside the hospital’s clinical strengths. In a large, busy Hospital like UCSF Medical Center, the quality of medical treatment may be a major draw, while administrative or service-related frustrations may still affect the overall experience.
Overall, UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco, CA appears best suited for people who value access to specialized hospital care, advanced treatment options, and experienced physicians in a major academic medical setting. With a 3.5 rating from 359 reviews, public feedback points to both strong gratitude for serious medical care and honest criticism about operational consistency. For patients and families comparing hospitals in San Francisco, UCSF Medical Center stands out as an established option where high-level expertise, a calm environment, and complex care capabilities are often central to the experience.

Worst doctors and nurses. Doctor comes only once day. Nurses don't know anything when you ask questions. Will be ringing bell to use restroom. They won't answer for an hour. Lunch and dinner tray sitting in room for over 2 hours. Now I know why they sid even know that someone was dead on stairs for weeks . Because nurses don't even check on patients
World class doctors taking care of my dear friend. The neurosurgeon is the top rated in the world. The nursing staff and support staff were all so friendly and patient with answering all our questions as best they could. Couldn’t be in better hands. Very quiet, peaceful, and stress free environment in even the hardest of times. Side benefit, the views, especially in the upper floors are absolutely stunning.
I have been going to this hospital steadily for about 4 years now and I can count one on one had the bad experiences I’ve had…which is two to three. They have a wonderful, caring staff and always do their best to make me feel better and more comfortable. It has a beautiful view of the city and the bay that you can enjoy as well. I’m normally admitted when I come here and I live 45 minutes to an hour away. There is no other hospital that I go to. Thanks for always doing your best to accommodate me 😌
I am amazed that a healthcare system as acclaimed as UCSF can be so poorly run? I had to set up a referral to see a cancer specialist at the Sol Silverman Clinic. I spent a week from by phone, after getting a message saying "the system was down call back later..." I drove from Napa into the city to hand deliver my medical referral request. After being sent to 3 buildings and the receptionist was nice enough to allow me to go to the 7th floor to drop off the paperwork, no one was at the office. I went to 4 nearby offices to see how I could ensure the clinic would get my request...no one could help me or offer a suggestion? It seems that UCSF is made up of hundreds of depts. and these depts. are in their own silo. None of the silos speak, let alone interact with each other. How does anything get done at this behemoth dinosaur entity? The employees only know the area they exist in and work in daily...don't ask them anything that is more than the state sanctioned paygrade states. This is the epitome of CA bureaucratic gridlock, poor management, and not following their mission statement.
