With a 4.8 rating from 190 reviews, this neighborhood spot stands out not by being flashy, but by creating the kind of meal people remember long after dinner ends. Guests often describe the space as cozy and welcoming, with a sense of calm that makes conversation easy and the evening feel special without feeling stiff.

One detail that comes up again and again is the restaurant’s distinctive setup. Reviewers mention that chef John and a very small team handle both the kitchen and dining room, which gives the experience a hands-on, carefully paced feel. The dining room is described as intimate, with each table set into its own curtained pocket, adding privacy and a near private-dining atmosphere that is rare to find in San Francisco. That format seems to resonate especially well with couples, anniversary dinners, and anyone looking for a quieter night out where the focus stays on the food, the company, and the service.

At The Richmond, the tasting menu is the centerpiece, and diners consistently point to both the quality and generosity of the meal. Specific dishes mentioned in customer reviews include ribeye, squash soup, crab cake, ravioli, duck, and fish, with several guests noting that even dishes they did not expect to love turned out to be highlights. The pre-fixe format appears to be paired naturally with generous wine service, and wine pairings are frequently praised as a memorable part of the experience. Rather than offering a rushed or overly formal progression of courses, the restaurant seems to deliver a dinner that unfolds comfortably, with attention to timing and detail.

Service is another reason The Richmond leaves such a strong impression in San Francisco, CA. Guests describe John as a gracious host and repeatedly praise the attentiveness of the team, noting that they felt welcomed, cared for, and comfortable throughout the meal. That balance of warm service and refined cooking helps explain why the restaurant is often chosen for celebrations, date nights, and meaningful dinners. The music selection, including classic rock and 90s favorites according to one review, also adds personality to the room and helps the restaurant feel lived-in rather than overly curated.

For diners searching for a New American restaurant in San Francisco that offers an intimate tasting-menu dinner, generous wine pairings, and genuinely attentive hospitality, The Richmond is a place that fits naturally into the conversation. What a great place, and why I have discovered it only now. John is the most gracious host who made us feel extremely welcome and comfortable. The whole place is very cozy. It's like a private dining. We were able to enjoy our food and talk as if we were the only people in the restaurant. The food was also great. I don't really like butternut squash soup, but I loved John's. Halibut was very delicious that melted in your mouth. The other dishes were also great and wonderfully presented. Even the dinner rolls which they bake in the house, were also delicious. I actually begged John, and he gave me some to take home. I think the local patrons should chip in and buy this place a great espresso machine :). That was the only thing missing for me in this dinner.

The concept here is that the chef, John, and one waitress prepare all the food and service the tables in an intimate small space. The tasting menu is the only option! Every table has its own pocket, surrounded by curtains, to create a cozy private pocket. I loved the food, especially the ribeye. Two bonus courses. They easily accommodated a shellfish allergy, changing up one of the courses. Everything tasted fresh and was played beautifully. We also had good wine that was reasonably priced. Fantastic dining experience overall.

Amazing pre-fixe w wine pairing. The wine is very generous and the food exquisite. Service is also top notch. Great intimate place where you feel you get more than your moneys worth.

We went here for a belated anniversary dinner tonight and absolutely loved it. The food was DELICIOUS, the atmosphere was great (if you like classic rock and/or 90s music, you'll also love the music selection), and the couple that run the show/served us were attentive and hooked us up with extra courses and drinks. We had a private little booth, and it was wonderful. We both felt at home and I'm looking forward to going back (probably for my wife's birthday, nobody tell her🤫). If you haven't checked this place out yet, DO IT!

Not sure which was better—the food or the service. We loved everything on tasting menu and incredibly generous wine pairings. The surprise winner to me was the squash soup, which is a dish I would’ve sworn I hated before dining here. Everything was delicious—crab cake, ravioli, duck, the fish… Just perfect. The chef/owner is the kindest, most down-to-earth man. He was incredibly patient while explaining the wines to us, and he happily struck up conversation with us about the little treasures in the neighborhood. We can’t wait to return and try the menu during every season!
